The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is proud to announce Mary Blankenship as OUR’s 2020 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Awardee. This award recognizes one outstanding UNLV undergraduate student for excellence in research and includes a $500 monetary prize. Mary is a senior, double-majoring in Chemistry and Economics. An active undergraduate researcher, Mary is an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Clemens Heske’s Heske Research Group as well as a student researcher at Brookings Mountain West. During the 2020 calendar year, Mary has published several manuscripts, including co-authoring six Brookings Mountain West fact sheets and a pair of works assessing the impact of Twitter on current socio-political conditions. In addition, Mary also presented her research associated with the Heske Research Group in a virtual conference and was scheduled to travel to Strasbourg, France to present her research prior to COVID travel restrictions. Recently, Mary completed and published a capstone manuscript on the spread of misinformation through Twitter. Mary’s work attests to her research-readiness and inspires and engages her peers, as an outstanding undergraduate researcher, altogether contributing to UNLV’s commitment to excellence in research and teaching. We also commend Dr. Clemens Heske for his visible and strong support of undergraduate research. In addition to Mary, Dr. Heske mentors many other undergraduate students in different research stages.
