Symposium Judging and Awards
On Monday, November 16, 2020, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is hosting a virtual Undergraduate Research Symposium where a total of 123 projects from a diverse set of disciplines will be presented by 170 student researchers. We are consistently impressed with the high quality of research being conducted by our undergraduate students and appreciate your commitment to guiding them in their research endeavors.
The institutional support we all collectively provide merits special recognition. UNLV’s top leaders strongly and visibly endorse undergraduate research and generously deploy resources to empower our faculty and students. We loudly applaud our esteemed and dedicated academic faculty research mentors who are committed to excellence in teaching and research. We proudly recognize the unwavering commitment and dedication of our esteemed administrative faculty to improve UNLV’s research milieu so as to foster improved research involvement at the undergraduate level.
Judging
We also would like to extend a big, warm, and special thank you to colleagues who are always excited to volunteer their time to serve as a judge for our undergraduate research symposia. OUR’s triannual undergraduate symposium program is an integral part of our efforts to expand and enhance research education experiences at UNLV. Presenting in a professional setting and receiving constructive feedback from expert judges is an essential function that our students value the most. This type of experience is integral to our students’ overall career and research readiness and it arguably aligns well with all of UNLV’s five University Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (UULOs): (1) Intellectual Breadth and Lifelong Learning, (2) Inquiry and Critical Thinking, (3) Communication, (4) Global/Multicultural Knowledge and Awareness, and (5) Citizenship and Ethics.
OUR invites administrative and academic faculty to serve as a judge at the upcoming OUR Fall 2020 Virtual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Our students’ oral presentations are pre-recorded and their posters are also supplemented by pre-recorded narration. All the presentations will be posted on our symposium website beginning Monday, November 16th at 9:00 am until Friday, November 20, 5:00 pm. We invite judges and participants to browse through our presentation pages and interactively engage with presenters using the comments function. Please join our presenters, ask them questions, and give them feedback.
The formal judging process entails a panel of three judges, who may be academic or administrative faculty or advanced doctoral candidates, evaluating each presentation using the rubrics we have created with explicit assessment criteria. The judges will identify and award best oral presentations and best poster presentations in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and in Natural and Health Sciences and Engineering categories.
